In the spring of 2014, a young man's life was tragically cut short in what authorities believe was a robbery and drug deal gone wrong. Twenty-one-year-old Joel Tengue, a male resident of Gwinnett County, was found deceased on Saturday, April 19, 2014. A resident of the Astor Place Apartments on Boggs Road in Duluth, Georgia, discovered his body behind one of the buildings around noon. He had sustained a fatal gunshot wound.
Investigators quickly identified a suspect in the case, 24-year-old Nicambreon Flowers. Evidence suggested that Tengue had arranged to meet with an individual he had connected with online. He had told a friend he was going to sell a pair of Nike sneakers and expressed a sense of unease about the meeting. However, authorities came to believe that the actual purpose of the transaction was the sale of marijuana. It was during this encounter that the situation turned violent, leading to Tengue's death. His beige Ford Focus was also found at the apartment complex and was taken by police for processing.
Within days of the discovery of Tengue's body, law enforcement located and apprehended the suspect. Five days after the fatal shooting, Nicambreon Flowers was arrested in Mississippi. He was subsequently charged with felony murder and armed robbery in connection with Joel Tengue's death. The legal process moved forward, and the evidence presented against Flowers proved to be overwhelming.
In February 2016, Nicambreon Flowers, then 25, was convicted for his role in the death of Joel Tengue. A judge sentenced him to serve two concurrent life sentences for the murder and armed robbery convictions. This brought a legal conclusion to a case that began with a seemingly innocuous online arrangement and ended in a senseless act of violence.
