In the early hours of a Sunday morning in Augusta, Georgia, a quiet residential street became the scene of a fatal confrontation. On July 25, 2021, 18-year-old Jaylen Nairne was shot and killed during what authorities describe as a home invasion. The incident unfolded at a residence on Meadowgrove Drive shortly before 12:35 a.m.
Nairne, along with another individual, 21-year-old Deatoryin Ottley, allegedly entered the home with the intent to commit a robbery.
The target of their alleged crime was an 18-year-old resident of the home, Brice Fountain. Their objective was to steal a firearm from him. However, the situation quickly escalated into a violent struggle.
During the course of the attempted robbery, a gunfight erupted between the residents of the home and the intruders. In the exchange of gunfire, both Nairne and Fountain were struck. Nairne sustained a fatal gunshot wound to his torso and succumbed to his injuries at the scene. Fountain was also wounded during the altercation and was subsequently transported to Augusta University Medical Center for treatment of his injuries.
Following the incident, law enforcement launched an investigation that led to the arrest of Deatoryin Ottley. Because Nairne was killed during the commission of a crime in which Ottley was an active participant, Ottley was charged with murder. In addition to the murder charge, he also faces charges of criminal attempted robbery and weapon possession. The investigation determined that Brice Fountain had acted in self-defense when he shot Nairne.
