On a tragic evening in Macon, Georgia, the life of 26-year-old Roctavia 'Punky' Edwards, an African American woman, was cut short. On July 26, 2022, a shooting broke out at the Waverly Pointe apartments on Forest Hill Road. Edwards was remembered as a free-spirited and loving individual with a contagious smile. The incident, which occurred around 7:13 p.m.
during a gathering outside one of the apartment buildings, resulted in her death and claimed the life of 17-year-old Jayden Ellington as well. Two other teenagers were also injured in the shooting.
Bibb County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to the chaotic scene and began an investigation into the violence that had shattered the evening. Their work led to the identification and arrest of two suspects in connection with the fatal shooting. Shaqwonda Lakisha Russell, 37, and Kenneth Eugene Williams Jr., 38, were taken into custody.
The investigation led to significant charges against both individuals. Russell was charged with one count of murder. Williams faced more extensive charges, including two counts of murder and two counts of aggravated assault. In addition to these violent offenses, both Russell and Williams were charged with several drug and weapons offenses. Following their arrests, they were held without bond at the Bibb County Jail as the legal process against them began.
