The incident began late Sunday afternoon, when deputies with the Bibb County Sheriff's Office were
called to the gas station parking lot around 5:33 p.m. Investigators said Jones had been involved in an argument with Delmar Tavaris Eugene Black, 35. During that confrontation, Black allegedly shot Jones multiple times in the parking lot. As she tried to get away from him, she ran toward Mercer University Drive and was struck by a vehicle traveling westbound. Emergency responders took her by ambulance to a local hospital, where she remained in critical condition before later dying.
Authorities said Black fled the scene before deputies arrived. Investigators identified him as the suspect and later found a silver Buick Enclave on Harrison Road around 7:35 p.m. The situation escalated when Black allegedly refused to get out of the vehicle and fired at deputies. The Bibb County Sheriff's Office SWAT team, negotiators, and other units responded, and after a standoff that lasted roughly two hours, Black was taken into custody at about 9:09 p.m. A firearm was recovered, and Black was treated for injuries sustained during his arrest before being released from the hospital.
Black was initially charged with aggravated assault, aggravated assault on law enforcement officers, and felony fleeing and attempting to elude law enforcement officers. After Jones died, authorities upgraded the charges to murder.
