On the afternoon of December 15, 2025, a violent encounter in the parking lot of a NAPA Auto Parts in Wendell, Idaho, left 35-year-old Matthew Bodsford dead from a fatal gunshot wound. The incident, which occurred around 4:30 p.m., was the culmination of a heated dispute between Bodsford and another man.
Authorities arriving at the scene discovered Bodsford in the passenger seat of an orange minivan. He had been shot in the head.
Also in the vehicle were Bodsford's girlfriend and her daughter, who were unharmed. The alleged shooter, identified as 38-year-old Cesar Padilla, had fled the scene in a white Ford Expedition.
The conflict between the two men reportedly stemmed from sexually inappropriate questions Padilla had allegedly asked about his ex-girlfriend's daughters. Bodsford's girlfriend had previously been in a relationship with Padilla, and they shared a child. Their relationship ended after she discovered inappropriate photos of her daughters on his phone. On the day of the shooting, Bodsford and Padilla had been arguing over the phone and had arranged to meet at the auto parts store to fight. Bodsford had reportedly told Padilla not to bring a weapon to the confrontation.
According to accounts of the incident, Bodsford's girlfriend drove him and her daughter to the agreed-upon location where Padilla was already waiting. After she parked next to his vehicle, Padilla approached the passenger side of the minivan and shot Bodsford.
Law enforcement was able to identify Padilla's vehicle through its license plate and initiated a traffic stop in neighboring Elmore County, where he was arrested without resistance. Padilla has since been charged with first-degree murder and unlawful discharge of a firearm at an occupied vehicle. A judge set his bond at $1,000,000, and his preliminary hearing was scheduled for December 30, 2025.
