A quiet Friday morning in the small town of Wendell, Idaho, was shattered on August 4, 2017, ending in the tragic death of 56-year-old Tony Sousa, a Hispanic male. The incident, which unfolded at the Magic Valley Portuguese Hall, was determined by authorities to be a murder-suicide. Sousa, who was the president of the hall, was found deceased inside the establishment along with 34-year-old Augustin Nopal Eonu.
At the time of the incident, the Portuguese Hall was undergoing renovations.
Eonu was one of the construction workers employed for the project. Other workers were reportedly outside the building around 11 a.m. but did not witness the events that transpired inside the hall's bar area. The Gooding County Sheriff's Office reported that a rifle was the weapon used in the two deaths.
In the immediate aftermath, law enforcement officials did not publicly identify which of the two men was the initial shooter, and the motive behind the tragic event remained unknown. The investigation was handed over to the county coroner's office. The tight-knit Portuguese community in Wendell was left in shock and mourning following the violent incident that claimed the life of their community hall's president.
