On a Friday afternoon in Athens, Georgia, the life of 19-year-old Alijah Nelson was cut short in a burst of gunfire stemming from a gang-related dispute. The fatal encounter unfolded on October 21, 2022, in the area between a Citgo gas station on Gaines School Road and a Goodwill store. Nelson, along with a fellow gang member, 27-year-old Jeffery Rice, had driven into the gas station parking lot.
Both were members of the Red Tape Gang, a local street gang with ties to the national Bloods gang.
Upon spotting a rival gang member, Rice abruptly stopped the vehicle. Both he and Nelson exited, armed and ready to confront their adversary. Nelson immediately began shooting at the rival, who was struck multiple times in the abdomen but managed to return fire. In what was later deemed an act of self-defense, the rival gang member fatally shot Alijah Nelson. Rice reportedly fired at least one shot before his weapon jammed. The shootout also resulted in injuries to an 18-year-old, Deneritus Marquies Wilson.
In the aftermath of the deadly exchange, law enforcement began an investigation that quickly focused on the gang connections to the shooting. About a week after the incident, Jeffery Rice was arrested in connection with Nelson's death. While the rival gang member who fired the fatal shot was not charged due to the self-defense nature of his actions, Rice faced significant legal consequences for his role in instigating the violent confrontation.
Jeffery Rice was ultimately convicted on multiple charges, including voluntary manslaughter, aggravated assault, and violation of the Street Gang Terrorism and Prevention Act. For his part in the events that led to the death of his fellow gang member, he was sentenced to 30 years, with the first 18 years to be served in prison, followed by 12 years of strict probation. The case highlighted the ongoing efforts of law enforcement in the Athens-Clarke County area to combat the violence and criminal activities associated with street gangs.
