Juan Jose Diaz, a 24-year-old off-duty Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) officer, was tragically killed on July 27, 2019, in Lincoln Heights, Los Angeles. Diaz was at a taco stand near Avenue 26 and Artesian Street with his girlfriend and her two brothers when the incident occurred. According to reports, a group of young men approached Diaz and his companions, making threats and displaying a gun. Diaz, who had been with the LAPD for about two years, was shot and pronounced dead at the scene.

Cristian Facundo, 20, of Murrieta, and Francisco Talamantes III, 24, of Temecula, were charged with capital murder in connection with the shooting. Ashlynn Smith, 18, of Temecula, was also charged with shooting at an occupied motor vehicle and vandalism, along with being an accessory after the fact. The suspects were apprehended during morning raids in Riverside County and were held without bail.
