Juan Jose Diaz, a 24-year-old off-duty Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) officer, was tragically killed on July 27, 2019, in Lincoln Heights, Los Angeles. Diaz was at a taco stand near Avenue 26 and Artesian Street with his girlfriend and her two brothers when the incident occurred. According to reports, a group of young men approached Diaz and his companions, making threats and displaying a gun. Diaz, who had been with the LAPD for about two years, was shot and pronounced dead at the scene.
