Edgar Leonel Canaan, aged 47, tragically lost his life on August 28, 2016, in Los Angeles, California. The incident occurred in the Lake View Terrace neighborhood, where Canaan was shot during a dispute that escalated into violence. According to reports, the altercation began over tire-screeching noises, which led to a heated argument between neighbors.
As the situation seemed to de-escalate, Richard Chico Nevarez arrived at the scene and opened fire on the victims, including Canaan.
Canaan, along with another victim, Moises Farias, was shot and later succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. A third victim, Hector Hernandez, survived the attack but was critically wounded. The shooting was described as senseless and unnecessary, with Nevarez indiscriminately firing at the victims.
Following the incident, Nevarez was arrested by the Los Angeles Police Department's Metropolitan Division in March 2019. He was charged with two counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of Canaan and Farias, as well as one count each of attempted murder and assault with a semiautomatic firearm for the injuries sustained by Hernandez. The charges included a special-circumstance allegation of multiple murders, along with allegations of using a handgun and having a prior conviction for first-degree burglary.
In August 2024, Nevarez was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. During the trial, the prosecution emphasized the senseless nature of the crime, noting that Nevarez was not initially part of the dispute and began shooting after arriving at the scene. The defense argued that Nevarez was acting in defense of his family, but the court ultimately found him guilty of the charges.
