Moises Farias, a 68-year-old resident of Los Angeles, California, tragically lost his life on August 28, 2016, in a violent incident that shocked the Lake View Terrace community. Farias, along with his neighbor Edgar Canaan, was fatally shot following a heated argument over tire-screeching noises. The dispute initially involved the family of Richard Chico Nevarez, who later arrived at the scene and escalated the situation by opening fire.
The altercation, which had seemingly de-escalated, turned deadly when Nevarez indiscriminately began shooting, resulting in the deaths of Farias and Canaan, and injuring a third individual.
The legal proceedings that followed were extensive and complex. Richard Chico Nevarez was arrested in March 2019 by the Los Angeles Police Department’s Metropolitan Division. He faced multiple charges, including two counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of Farias and Canaan, as well as attempted murder and assault with a semiautomatic firearm for the injuries inflicted on the third victim. The charges were further aggravated by a special-circumstance allegation of multiple murders and the use of a handgun, compounded by Nevarez's prior conviction for first-degree burglary in 2008.
During the trial, the prosecution portrayed Nevarez's actions as senseless and unnecessary, emphasizing that the victims were shot either in the side or the back, indicating a lack of immediate threat to Nevarez. The defense, however, argued that Nevarez was acting in defense of his family, who were involved in the initial argument. Despite these claims, the court found Nevarez guilty, and he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole in 2024. The case highlighted the devastating impact of neighborhood disputes escalating into violence and underscored the severe consequences of such actions.
