In the early hours of September 13, 1992, during her overnight shift, she offered to go on a food run for her colleagues. She was last seen leaving the airport around 1 a.m. When she failed to return, her coworkers did not report her missing; instead, they reportedly punched out her timecard at the end of her shift. It wasn't until the following day that her car was found, not by police, but by an employee of the auto body shop who noticed what appeared to be blood dripping from the trunk.
Investigators quickly determined that Susan had been killed elsewhere before her car was abandoned in Revere. The initial belief that it was a random act of violence soon gave way to a more complex and disturbing picture centered on her work environment.
