On August 21, 2023, 21-year-old Delrico S. Stephens was fatally shot in central Toledo, Ohio. The incident occurred around 2 p.m. near the intersection of North Detroit and Prospect avenues. Officers responded to a ShotSpotter alert indicating seven gunshots in the area. Upon arrival, they found Stephens with a gunshot wound to the head. He was transported to ProMedica Toledo Hospital in critical condition and succumbed to his injuries later that night.
The Lucas County Coroner's Office ruled Stephens' death a homicide, citing the cause as a gunshot wound to the head. Witnesses reported that the shooting followed an argument outside a nearby carryout. Despite these accounts, no arrests were made immediately following the incident, and the Toledo Police Department continued to investigate.
A year later, on August 22, 2024, Toledo police released photographs of two individuals sought for identification in connection with Stephens' homicide. Authorities urged anyone with information about these individuals or the incident to contact Crime Stoppers, emphasizing that tips could remain anonymous and might be eligible for a cash reward. As of that date, no suspects had been publicly identified or arrested, and the case remained under active investigation.
Stephens' death marked the 22nd homicide in Toledo for the year 2023, with 19 of those resulting from shootings. This represented a decrease compared to the same period in 2022, which had seen 36 homicides by August 22. The community continued to grapple with the loss and the ongoing issue of gun violence in the area.
