David Hernandez Gutierrez, a 22-year-old resident of Anaheim, California, tragically lost his life on December 21, 2021, in what authorities have described as a possibly gang-related shooting. The incident occurred around 4:15 p.m. on the 2100 block of East Balsam Avenue. According to reports, Anaheim police officers responded to calls of gunfire and discovered Gutierrez suffering from at least one gunshot wound.
Despite being transported to a local hospital, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. Gutierrez, a father of two, was not believed to be affiliated with any gang, making his death particularly tragic and senseless.
In the aftermath of the shooting, Anaheim homicide detectives launched an intensive investigation to identify and apprehend those responsible for Gutierrez's death. Over the course of two months, detectives were able to identify two suspects: 21-year-old Damien Rubalcava of Costa Mesa and 20-year-old Franky Mejia Echeverria of Anaheim. Both suspects were known gang members, and their involvement in the shooting was believed to be part of ongoing gang-related activities in the area. On March 3, 2022, Rubalcava was arrested in Westminster without incident, thanks to the coordinated efforts of the Costa Mesa Police Department and the Orange County Sheriff's Department SWAT teams.
Rubalcava faced multiple charges, including vandalism, assault with a deadly weapon, shooting at another person from a motor vehicle, street terrorism, and gang enhancements. He was booked into the Anaheim Detention Facility and later transferred to Orange County Jail, where he was held in lieu of $1 million bail. Meanwhile, Echeverria remained at large, prompting authorities to issue a $1 million homicide warrant for his arrest. Echeverria was considered armed and dangerous, and law enforcement agencies sought the public's assistance in locating him.
The investigation into Gutierrez's murder highlighted the pervasive issue of gang violence in Anaheim and the surrounding areas. Despite the arrests, the community continued to grapple with the impact of such violence, particularly on innocent victims like Gutierrez and his family. The case underscored the importance of ongoing efforts by law enforcement to combat gang activity and bring justice to those affected by such senseless acts of violence.
