John Loughman, a 21-year-old patrolman with the New York City Police Department, tragically lost his life on January 19, 1908. His death was the result of a gunshot wound sustained while he was off-duty and attempting to assist in an arrest. On the night of the incident, Patrolman Loughman observed a detective struggling to arrest a suspect for pickpocketing near the corner of 116th Street and Third Avenue.
