In the early hours of a cold January morning in 1908, a young, off-duty New York City patrolman named John Loughman made the ultimate sacrifice. At approximately 12:50 AM on January 19th, the 21-year-old officer was near the corner of 116th Street and Third Avenue when he witnessed a detective struggling to arrest a man suspected of pickpocketing. The suspect, who was getting the upper hand, managed to overpower the detective and seize his firearm.
