On a tragic day in the Bronx, a horrific act of violence cut short the life of 14-year-old Ricky Gonzales. The Hispanic male was inside the Little Chester Shoe Store on December 19, 1995, with his mother, Maria Carrasquillo, and his 12-year-old brother, Rafael Gonzalez, when a gunman entered the store. The shooter, identified as 22-year-old Michael Vernon, opened fire, killing all three members of the Gonzalez family, as well as two other individuals in the store.
Three other people were also critically injured in the mass shooting.
The incident began when Vernon entered the shoe store and a dispute arose. He then pulled out a 9mm pistol and began shooting at close range. After the shooting, Vernon attempted to flee by taking a hostage. However, he was quickly confronted by a highway patrol officer. A shootout between Vernon and the officer ensued, resulting in Vernon being wounded and subsequently apprehended by the police.
During the investigation and subsequent trial, it was revealed that the shooting was the result of a botched robbery. Michael Vernon, who had a history of mental illness, was charged with multiple counts of first-degree murder and attempted murder. On October 25, 1997, a jury found him guilty on all charges. For his crimes, Vernon was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, ensuring that the man responsible for the senseless deaths of Ricky Gonzales and the other victims would remain behind bars for the rest of his life.
