On December 19, 1995, 14-year-old Ricky Gonzalez was among five victims fatally shot during a tragic incident at Little Chester Shoes, a store located near the Bronx Zoo in New York City. The assailant, 22-year-old Michael Vernon, entered the store shortly before noon, ostensibly to purchase a pair of size 13 1/2 boots. Following a dispute with store employees, Vernon brandished a 9mm pistol and began firing indiscriminately at close range.
