Willie Lora, a 21-year-old male, was fatally shot in the Bronx on December 8, 2014. The incident occurred around 4:30 p.m. in the lobby of an apartment building at 1566 Macombs Road, near West Mount Eden Road. Lora sustained a single gunshot wound to the chest and was transported to Bronx-Lebanon Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
An investigation led police to 21-year-old Brian Solano. Ten days after the shooting, Solano was arrested for the murder of Willie Lora.
The arrest was notable as it came shortly after Solano had been released from jail on a separate mugging charge. He was subsequently charged with murder, manslaughter, and criminal use and possession of a weapon.
Solano spent approximately three years at Rikers Island awaiting trial for Lora's death. The case against him took a significant turn when new evidence emerged, brought forward by a private investigator, suggesting that witnesses had been coerced into identifying Solano as the shooter. This development led to Solano's release without bail. Further complicating the prosecution's case, a videotaped police interview with another man, Justis Colon, was brought to light. In the video, Colon admitted to possessing the gun that ballistics had confirmed as the murder weapon.
The aftermath of Willie Lora's death was further marred by another tragedy. In November 2018, Brian Solano's mother, Wendy Martinez, was shot and killed through the peephole of her apartment door. Authorities believe her murder was an act of retaliation against her son for his alleged involvement in Lora's death. As of late 2019, the case against Brian Solano for the murder of Willie Lora was still pending.
