In the summer of 2001, the city of Newburgh was grappling with a surge in gang-related violence that had already claimed four lives that year. This climate of fear and bloodshed tragically culminated in the death of another young man, 21-year-old Mario Guevara. On the evening of June 2nd, at approximately 9:35 p.m., Guevara found himself in the hallway of a building at 112 William Street, near the intersection with Benkard Avenue.
