In the city of Newburgh, New York, a 28-year-old Black man named Antwan Thomas tragically lost his life on the night of November 3, 2018. The violent encounter unfolded near the intersection of Liberty and Clinton streets, stemming from a robbery attempt that quickly spiraled into a fatal exchange of gunfire. Antwan, an entrepreneur remembered for his ambition and involvement in the community, including organizing school supply and clothing drives, was confronted by three individuals with the
intent to rob him.
The perpetrators were identified as Antwan Wakely and twin brothers Dominique and Devin Williams. During the confrontation, the situation escalated dramatically when shots were fired. Armed with a. 32-caliber Walther semi-automatic handgun, Dominique Williams fired the shot that struck Antwan in the head, causing his immediate death. In the chaotic moments that followed, a second man, 25-year-old Alexis Camacho, who was with Wakely and the Williams brothers, was also shot and killed by an unknown individual. A third person sustained injuries but was treated and released from the hospital.
The investigation into the double homicide led to the arrests of the three men who had initially set out to rob Thomas. In the ensuing legal proceedings, Dominique Williams pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter for his role in Antwan Thomas's death. His brother, Devin Williams, and their accomplice, Antwan Wakely, both pleaded guilty to felony charges of fourth-degree conspiracy for their involvement in the robbery plot. While the case surrounding Antwan Thomas's death saw these convictions, the investigation into who shot and killed Alexis Camacho remains ongoing.
