On a Sunday afternoon in the Flatlands neighborhood of Brooklyn, 15-year-old Isiah Joseph’s life was cut short by a single bullet. It was around 1:15 p.m. on January 11, 2015, at the intersection of Avenue H and East 56th Street, when the young man was fatally shot in the back. A 20-year-old companion was also struck by gunfire, sustaining a wound to his torso, but he ultimately survived the attack.
Both victims were rushed to Brookdale Hospital, but for Isiah, it was too late.
In the wake of the shooting, details emerged suggesting a possible connection to street gang activity. Police sources indicated that a red cloth, a potential insignia of the Bloods gang, was seen hanging from the pocket of one of the suspects. Surveillance cameras in the vicinity captured footage of the individuals fleeing the scene after they approached the two victims and opened fire. The New York Police Department described the suspects as Black males in dark clothing, with the alleged shooter wearing a black jacket and gray pants.
Despite the available video evidence and public appeals for information, the case has grown cold over the years. Isiah’s mother expressed her profound grief, describing her son's death as a nightmare from which she could not wake. Friends remembered him as a good person with plans for the future. As of late 2017, nearly three years after the tragic event, no arrests had been made in the case. The investigation into the death of Isiah Joseph remains ongoing, leaving his family still searching for justice.
