In the late hours of a Tuesday evening in the Starrett City neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York, a tragic event unfolded that would cut short the life of 38-year-old Kahliq Francis. On November 21, 2017, inside his 16th-floor apartment on Pennsylvania Avenue, a violent encounter left Francis with a fatal gunshot wound to the head. When police responded to the scene at approximately 10:30 p.m., they discovered not only the critically injured Francis but also a 32-year-old woman who had been shot
in the torso and jaw.
Both victims were rushed to Brookdale Hospital for emergency medical treatment. Despite the efforts of medical staff, Kahliq Francis succumbed to his injuries the following day, on November 22, 2017. The incident that began as a shooting investigation swiftly turned into a homicide case, prompting a search for the person or persons responsible for the violence that had shattered the evening's calm.
The investigation led police to a suspect in the vicinity. On the evening of November 22nd, authorities arrested 20-year-old Durante Tirado, who lived nearby. Following his arrest, Tirado was charged with murder for the death of Kahliq Francis. He also faced charges of attempted murder in connection with the injuries sustained by the female victim and four counts of criminal weapons possession, bringing a swift, if not complete, resolution to the immediate question of who was responsible for the deadly shooting.
