In the early morning hours of a cold January day in Queens, New York, a devastating act of violence shattered the quiet of a suburban-like street. Shantai Hale, a 31-year-old woman, was tragically killed on January 24, 2015, in her home. The tranquility of the neighborhood was irrevocably broken by the actions of her longtime boyfriend, Jonathon Walker, who was 34 at the time.
The events that unfolded were a horrifying murder-suicide.
Walker, a security guard and nightclub bouncer, arrived at the family's residence and proceeded to shoot Shantai Hale. In addition to killing Hale, Walker also fatally shot her 62-year-old mother, Viola Warren, and his and Shantai's 7-year-old daughter, Kayla Walker. The couple's older daughter, 12-year-old Christina Walker, was also shot but miraculously survived and was able to call 911 for help.
After the horrific attack on his family, Jonathon Walker fled the scene. A few hours later, his body was discovered by police in his car a few miles away. He had died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Law enforcement officials reported that Walker had contacted his brother after the shootings, telling him, 'What I did, I cannot come back from.'
Family members who spoke to the media expressed profound shock and disbelief, stating there were no apparent signs of trouble within the family that would suggest such a violent outcome. While police records indicated a couple of prior domestic incident reports at the address from nearly a decade earlier, relatives were unaware of any recent strife.
