In a tragic turn of events, 50-year-old Michelle Carter, a female resident of Germantown, Maryland, lost her life in what authorities have described as a murder-suicide. The incident unfolded on a Monday morning, February 28, 2022, when police responded to reports of gunshots in the parking lot of a townhome community on Highstream Drive.
Upon their arrival at the scene, officers discovered the bodies of Ms. Carter and 51-year-old Richard Maurice Harris.
Both individuals had sustained fatal gunshot wounds and were pronounced dead at the location. A handgun was also recovered nearby. Investigators from the Montgomery County Department of Police Major Crimes Division quickly determined that Carter and Harris had been in a prior relationship.
The investigation concluded that Harris was the perpetrator, shooting and killing Carter before turning the gun on himself. Friends and family of Carter later revealed that she had been stalked by Harris after she had ended their relationship, and he reportedly did not take the breakup well. The case was officially ruled a murder-suicide, with Michelle Carter identified as the victim and Richard Maurice Harris as the suspect. As Harris died at the scene, there were no arrests or subsequent trial.
