On a spring evening in Brooklyn, what should have been a time of somber reflection turned into a scene of chaos and violence that tragically cut short the life of Ronald Murphy. The 44-year-old man was fatally shot on April 27, 2015, outside the Emmanuel Church of God in the East Flatbush neighborhood. Murphy was an innocent bystander caught in the deadly escalation of a long-simmering dispute.
The tragic events unfolded as mourners gathered for a funeral service.
A confrontation erupted between Sharieff Clayton, 40, and brothers Pierre and Fritz Celestine. The feud between Clayton and the Celestine brothers was said to have roots stretching back to the 1990s. Words exchanged outside the church quickly devolved into gunfire, with the Celestine brothers allegedly opening fire. In the ensuing violence, both Clayton and Murphy were struck and killed. Four other individuals were also injured in the shooting.
Following the deadly incident, law enforcement officials made an arrest. Pierre Celestine was taken into custody and later pleaded not guilty to the murders of both Ronald Murphy and Sharieff Clayton. The senseless act of violence left the community reeling, transforming a place of grieving into the site of a brutal double homicide that claimed the life of a man who was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.
