Javier Avila, a 22-year-old Hispanic/Latino man, was killed by gunfire in Brooklyn, New York, on March 29, 1992. Publicly available accounts preserve few details about the shooting itself: they do not identify the precise location, describe what Avila was doing beforehand, or explain how many times he was shot. What emerges instead is a case that later became part of a much larger investigation into a young Brooklyn gunman suspected of leaving a trail of violence across several states.
