In the early morning hours of September 1, 2015, a burst of gunfire on a Bronx street shattered the predawn quiet, leaving one man dead and another wounded. The life of 22-year-old Rahim Minkins was tragically cut short when he was shot in the head in front of 1023 Rev. James Polite Avenue. The shooting, which occurred at approximately 4 a.m., also resulted in another individual suffering a gunshot wound to the leg.
Emergency services responded to the scene, but Minkins' injuries proved
to be fatal. As the community grappled with the violent loss, the New York Police Department launched an immediate and intensive investigation into the homicide. Their efforts quickly led them to a primary suspect, 28-year-old Adonijah Colbourne. In a strange twist of events, Colbourne's attempt to flee the scene was reportedly thwarted when he accidentally shot himself, an injury that ultimately led to his identification and capture by law enforcement.
Following his arrest, Adonijah Colbourne was charged with murder and manslaughter, among other offenses, in connection with the shooting death of Rahim Minkins. The arrest brought a measure of resolution to a community shaken by the sudden and senseless violence. While the legal proceedings against Colbourne commenced, friends, family, and community members mourned the loss of a young life, holding vigils and memorials to honor Minkins' memory and to call for an end to gun violence in their neighborhood.
