In a grim discovery that shattered the holiday season, the decomposing bodies of Anderson Nunez and his girlfriend, Rosie Sanchez, were found in their Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn apartment in early January 2016. The couple had been brutally murdered days earlier, on December 28, 2015. Nunez, a 40-year-old male, was found with two gunshot wounds and had been stabbed over 30 times. His partner, 38-year-old Rosie Sanchez, had been shot in the head and stabbed in the heart.
The gruesome scene was uncovered after a relative of Sanchez grew concerned and alerted the police.
The investigation quickly turned towards Sanchez's own daughter, 15-year-old Destiny Garcia, who also lived in the apartment. Garcia was taken into questioning and soon confessed to her involvement in the horrific double murder. Her initial account to the police claimed that Nunez had sexually abused her and her mother had failed to protect her. However, her story later shifted, alleging that her mother was physically abusive. Investigators, however, did not believe the killings were an act of self-defense, pointing to the fact that she had procured a gun. After the murders, Garcia reportedly went out to party in Times Square for New Year's Eve while the bodies of her mother and Nunez lay in their home.
Further investigation revealed that Garcia did not act alone. Her 28-year-old boyfriend, Jerry Maisonett, was identified as her accomplice. According to prosecutors, Maisonett provided the gun used in the killings. It is believed that after Garcia shot her mother and then shot Nunez, he fought back. Maisonett then allegedly took the gun and fired at Nunez. In a particularly chilling detail, it was reported that Maisonett returned to the apartment at one point to retrieve the murder weapons and stabbed Nunez again to 'make sure he was dead.' His DNA was recovered from the crime scene, linking him directly to the brutal slayings.
Destiny Garcia was arrested on January 4, 2016, and charged as an adult with two counts of second-degree murder and weapons possession. Following a jury trial, she was convicted of two counts of first-degree manslaughter and one count of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon. Jerry Maisonett was arrested on February 16, 2016. He pleaded guilty to first-degree murder on August 8, 2022. For his role in the heinous crimes, Maisonett was sentenced to 22 years to life in prison.
