In the spring of 2018, a young Black man named Valentin Cruz, who was 20 years old, lost his life in a burst of gunfire on a street in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. On the afternoon of May 23rd, what began as a heated argument quickly spiraled into a deadly confrontation. Cruz, in the company of two friends, had arrived on Hewes Street near South Third Street in a van. They emerged to confront two other young men, 21-year-old Bruce Arroyo and 19-year-old Jason Ortiz.
The tension between the groups, who were all acquainted from the neighborhood, erupted into violence.
The initial moments of the clash saw Arroyo allegedly strike Cruz in the head with a baseball bat. In response, Cruz reportedly drew a firearm and shot Arroyo in the chest and Ortiz in the back. Despite being wounded, Ortiz managed to return fire, striking Cruz multiple times in the head and chest. The exchange of gunfire continued briefly with Cruz's companions before they fled the scene in the van, leaving Cruz mortally wounded on the pavement. He was transported to Woodhull Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. The chaotic scene was littered with at least ten shell casings, a stark testament to the ferocity of the encounter that was believed to be gang-related.
In the aftermath of the shooting, the investigation led to pending charges against the two other wounded individuals. Bruce Arroyo, after being shot, managed to walk into the 90th Precinct stationhouse. Jason Ortiz drove himself to the same hospital where Cruz was taken. Police indicated that charges were pending against both Arroyo and Ortiz. The driver of the van that Cruz had arrived in remained at large following the incident. The investigation continued as police sought to apprehend all individuals involved in the fatal daytime shootout.
