In the industrial streets of East New York, Brooklyn, a memorial of candles marked the spot where a life was violently taken. On a Saturday evening in early October, 34-year-old Luis Gonzalez was fatally stabbed in the abdomen near the intersection of Sheffield and Glenmore Avenues. The assault happened around 6:45 p.m., and despite being rushed to a local hospital, the man succumbed to his injuries. He lived just a half-mile from where he was attacked.
