On a street in Red Hook, Brooklyn, the life of 33-year-old Yusef Dinkins, a male resident of Dwight Street, was cut short on the evening of March 27, 2022. The fatal encounter unfolded near a Kennedy Fried Chicken on Hicks Street, just a few blocks from his home. An argument that began inside the eatery with a 20-year-old man quickly spiraled into a physical fight outside.
The dispute took a deadly turn when the younger man reportedly brandished a firearm.
Dinkins suffered multiple gunshot wounds to his torso and arm. Emergency services were called to the chaotic scene around 6:40 p.m., and Dinkins was rushed to NYU Langone Hospital-Brooklyn. Despite the efforts of medical staff, he succumbed to his injuries a short time later.
In the immediate aftermath, police took the 20-year-old man, who was considered a person of interest, into custody for questioning. Investigators recovered a firearm at the scene. It was also reported that the suspect had sustained a slash wound, though it was not immediately clear if Dinkins had inflicted it during the altercation.
