In the winter of 2017, the life of James E. Smith Jr., a 33-year-old man from Syracuse, New York, was violently cut short in what should have been the safety of his own home. On a Tuesday in December, a group of individuals forced their way into his residence, and during the course of this home invasion, Smith was fatally shot.
