On a late Tuesday morning in Syracuse, New York, the life of 22-year-old Nykeem Stallworth, a Black male, was tragically cut short. On April 18, 2023, at approximately 11:44 a.m., officers from the Syracuse Police Department were dispatched to the 200 block of Martin Luther King West following reports of a shooting. Their investigation led them to a driveway at 206 Furman Street, where they discovered Stallworth suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to his upper torso.
Despite the immediate response and efforts of emergency medical personnel, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The subsequent investigation into Stallworth's death was extensive, involving numerous interviews and a wide-ranging canvass of the neighborhood and the city. Detectives executed several search warrants and meticulously analyzed the evidence they collected. Their efforts soon zeroed in on a 16-year-old male who had a prior arrest for handgun possession near the scene of the homicide. This individual, later identified as Nile Trice, became the primary suspect in the fatal shooting of Nykeem Stallworth.
Less than a month after the shooting, on May 15, 2023, the 16-year-old suspect was formally charged in connection with Stallworth's death. He was arraigned in Youth Court on charges of second-degree murder and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon. Following the arraignment, he was remanded to the Hillbrook Juvenile Detention Center. Later, Nile Trice, who was 18 by the time of his sentencing, admitted to the shooting and was sentenced to 20 years in prison for the murder of Nykeem Stallworth. At the sentencing, Stallworth's mother and Trice both spoke, with Trice expressing remorse for his actions.
