On the night of December 18, 2021, a burst of gunfire shattered the evening calm in the 1100 block of West Colvin Street in Syracuse, New York. When the sound faded, 29-year-old Shakeale Kashif Gibran Hill, a Black / African American male, lay fatally wounded. The incident marked another life lost to gun violence in the city.
In the months that followed, Syracuse Police detectives worked to piece together the events of that tragic night.
Their investigation ultimately led them to identify two suspects in connection with the homicide. In early April 2022, the efforts of law enforcement resulted in a significant breakthrough with the arrests of 31-year-old Jaquell Bailey and 32-year-old Lionel Brown, both from Syracuse.
Both Bailey and Brown were charged with murder and criminal possession of a weapon, bringing a measure of progress in the quest for justice for Shakeale Hill and his grieving family. The arrests offered a glimmer of hope that those responsible for his death would be held accountable for their actions.
