On June 23, 2021, 15-year-old Nykim Young was fatally shot in the upper body. The incident occurred around 6:30 p.m. near Lower Onondaga Park, at the intersection of Rich Street and Marginal Street. Despite the efforts of those at the scene, the young freshman from the Institute of Technology in Syracuse succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
This violent act marked the city's 12th homicide of the year.
The investigation into the death of the male teenager moved swiftly, leading to the arrest of 18-year-old Demetry Spears. The evidence against Spears was significant and included video footage that captured the events of that evening.
