In the early hours of a Sunday morning, on June 16, 2024, the life of 30-year-old Jamar Mack, a Black male, was tragically cut short in Syracuse, New York. The incident unfolded at approximately 2:26 a.m. when Syracuse Police responded to a call of shots fired in the 4100 block of South Salina Street, near the Valley Plaza. Upon their arrival, officers discovered Mack suffering from gunshot wounds.
He was quickly transported to University Hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead.
A short time after Mack was found, another man, aged 34, arrived at Crouse Hospital with non-life-threatening gunshot injuries believed to be connected to the same incident. This individual was expected to survive. In the wake of the shooting, the community was left mourning a man who was deeply invested in the city's youth. Mack was a beloved and dedicated youth football coach for the Salt City Renegades, a travel league for children. Those who knew him described him as a father figure to many of the young players, a man who had a unique talent for connecting with and inspiring them both on and off the field.
The loss of Jamar Mack was felt profoundly throughout the community, particularly among the young athletes he mentored. His death contributed to a record-breaking number of homicides in Syracuse for the month of June 2024. The Salt City Renegades organization, along with Mack's family and friends, were left to grieve the sudden and violent end to a life that had positively impacted so many. He was a graduate of Corcoran High School's class of 2011 and a devoted father to his two children, a daughter and a son.
As of late 2025, the investigation into Jamar Mack's death is ongoing. The Syracuse Police Department has not publicly identified any suspects in connection with the shooting, and no arrests have been made. Authorities have continued to urge anyone with information regarding the incident to come forward as they seek to bring closure to Mack's family and the community he served.
