In the early hours of a Thursday in June, a veteran NYPD homicide detective, Joseph Calabrese, vanished after leaving a Brooklyn hospital where his wife was being treated for a minor procedure. The 57-year-old man, a respected member of the Brooklyn South homicide squad, was last seen around 2 a.m. When he failed to report for his shift, concern grew, and a massive search was initiated.
