In the warm evening of June 2, 2020, a tragedy unfolded on a street in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn, forever altering the lives of one family. Kevin Moore, a 28-year-old Black man and a father to three children, found himself in the role of a peacemaker, a characteristic his family said defined him. A dispute had broken out between his friend and another man, and Moore, true to his nature, stepped in to quell the escalating tensions.
The confrontation, however, took a fatal turn.
The man arguing with Moore's friend, identified as Aveeno Peters, allegedly produced a firearm. In a senseless act of violence, Peters is accused of shooting Moore in the stomach. The sound of the gunshot shattered the night, and Kevin Moore fell, mortally wounded while trying to mediate a conflict. He was rushed to Brookdale University Hospital, but his injuries proved too severe, and he was pronounced dead.
In the aftermath of the shooting, the alleged assailant, Aveeno Peters, vanished, eluding authorities for more than two months. The search for Peters came to an end when U.S. Marshals tracked him to Essex County, New Jersey. He was taken into custody and subsequently charged with the murder of Kevin Moore, bringing a measure of relief to a grieving family who had been praying for justice. The legal proceedings against Peters commenced, with prosecutors highlighting Moore's role as a good Samaritan who tragically lost his life while attempting to prevent violence.
