In the Red Hook neighborhood of Brooklyn, Howard Tony A. Sterling, a 53-year-old Black man, was a beloved figure, known by some as the "Santa Clause of Red Hook" for his generosity. His life was tragically cut short on the morning of October 5, 2014, when he was found shot in his apartment in the Red Hook Houses. Police responded to a 911 call and discovered Sterling unconscious with a gunshot wound to his leg. He was rushed to New York Methodist Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The death was quickly ruled a homicide, marking the first in the 76th police precinct for that year, shaking a community that had seen a decrease in violence.
The investigation into Sterling's murder led to the arrests of two men, Bobby Boomer and Omar Gray, in December 2014. The prosecution's case against them was built on the theory of an attempted robbery gone wrong, alleging that Boomer shot Sterling in the leg before they fled the scene. Their evidence reportedly relied on witness testimony and video surveillance. However, the case against Boomer and Gray began to unravel. Their defense attorneys argued that the evidence was insufficient and pointed to what they described as "faulty witnesses."
Two years after the arrests, the quest for justice for Tony Sterling took an unexpected turn. In August 2016, Bobby Boomer was acquitted at trial. A month later, in September 2016, the case against Omar Gray was dismissed. Both men were released after spending two years in pretrial detention. The defense attorneys highlighted significant weaknesses in the prosecution's case, including inconsistent DNA evidence found at the scene. A fingerprint discovered in the apartment did not match Sterling, Boomer, or Gray, and DNA evidence from a bedroom dresser was never compared to the victim. With both cases sealed after the outcomes, the murder of Howard Tony A. Sterling officially remains unsolved, leaving his community still searching for answers and closure in the tragic loss of a man who had a significant impact on his neighborhood.
