In the early afternoon of a Sunday in January, a burst of violence shattered the quiet of a Brooklyn apartment building. Inside a residence on Covert Street, 32-year-old Lamel Murphy, a male from the Bronx, was shot multiple times. The incident occurred at approximately 12:47 p.m. on January 29, 2023. Responding to a 911 call, police discovered Murphy with gunshot wounds to his chest and leg.
Emergency medical services rushed him to One Brooklyn Health-Brookdale University Hospital
Medical Center in a desperate attempt to save his life. Despite their efforts, Lamel Murphy succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the hospital. The investigation into his death was immediately launched by the New York Police Department, with detectives canvassing the three-story brick building for evidence and witnesses.
In the aftermath of the shooting, police began searching for a male suspect who was reportedly seen wearing a black mask and blue jeans.
