In the early morning hours in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Sunset Park, a violent encounter inside an illegal nightclub claimed the life of 31-year-old Giovanni Rivera. The establishment, located at 5002 Third Avenue, was known to residents for its late-night, boisterous activity. On this particular morning, at approximately 5 a.m., a 911 call reporting an assault in progress brought officers from the 72nd Precinct to the scene.
Upon their arrival, police discovered Rivera inside the
club with multiple gunshot wounds to his torso and back. Emergency medical services were dispatched and quickly transported him to NYU Langone Hospital-Brooklyn in an effort to save his life. Despite their efforts, Rivera ultimately succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital. The motive for the fatal shooting has not been publicly released by authorities.
The investigation into the homicide progressed swiftly, and a person of interest was taken into custody for questioning. The following day, police arrested 27-year-old Gabriel Hernandez in connection with the shooting. Hernandez has since been charged with manslaughter and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon. The case against him is now proceeding through the criminal justice system.
