A late summer evening in Brooklyn turned tragic when gunfire erupted, claiming the life of 28-year-old Shyhemm Lee. On September 11, 2025, just before midnight, the sounds of shots shattered the peace outside an apartment building on Lexington Avenue in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood. Responding to a 911 call, police officers arrived at the scene to a grim discovery.
Shyhemm Lee, a resident of Brownsville, was found with a fatal gunshot wound to the head.
Alongside him, a 23-year-old woman had suffered a graze wound to her neck. Both were rushed to Kings County Hospital, but Lee's injuries proved too severe, and he was pronounced dead. The young woman, fortunately, was listed in stable condition. The area around the apartment building, part of the NYCHA Armstrong II development, was quickly cordoned off by investigators, who found a scooter and numerous shell casings scattered on the ground, with at least 21 evidence markers indicating the chaos of the event.
In the immediate aftermath, authorities began a search for those responsible. Witnesses reported seeing two unidentified men fleeing the scene on foot, heading north on Marcy Avenue. One of the suspects was described as wearing all blue, while the other was in a gray shirt, light-colored pants, and dark sneakers. As of the days following the shooting, no arrests had been made, and the investigation remained active. Police were reviewing surveillance footage from the building in an effort to identify the individuals who fled and to understand the circumstances that led to the deadly shooting. It was not immediately clear if there was a relationship between Lee and the injured woman.
