Naveed Afzal, a 52-year-old Pakistani man, had moved to New York from his home country in search of a better future for his four children. He worked tirelessly at various small jobs, but when fortune didn't favor him, he sold property back in Pakistan to purchase a car and begin a new chapter as a taxi driver. Just two weeks into his new endeavor, his dreams for his family were tragically cut short on the night of June 20, 2024.
While sitting in his black Mercedes-Benz sedan in front of
320 Lincoln Place in the Prospect Heights section of Brooklyn, Naveed Afzal was ambushed. At approximately 10 p.m., two unidentified men approached his vehicle from behind and fired a single shot, striking him in the face. Eyewitnesses reported seeing two men fleeing the scene on foot. Afzal was rushed to New York-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital in critical condition. He succumbed to his injuries three days later, on June 23, 2024, and his death was ruled a homicide.
The New York Police Department is actively investigating the murder. The suspects are described as two men with dark complexions, estimated to be between 18 and 25 years old. One was reportedly wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, black pants, and black sneakers, while the other was seen in a blue hooded sweatshirt, gray pants, and black sneakers. A gun was recovered at the scene, but its ownership has not been determined. As of now, the two suspects remain at large, and no arrests have been made in the case that so abruptly ended a father's quest for a better life for his family. The body of Naveed Afzal was to be sent back to his hometown of Faisalabad, Pakistan, for burial.
