In the winter of 2020, a young man's life was cut short in a burst of violence in the Flatlands neighborhood of Brooklyn. Dontae McKenzie, a 22-year-old male, was fatally shot on the evening of February 11th. The incident unfolded around 6:10 p.m. in the courtyard of the Glenwood Houses on Ralph Avenue, where an argument escalated into a deadly confrontation. During the dispute, one of the individuals involved opened fire, striking McKenzie in the chest.
Emergency services rushed him to Brookdale University Hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal.
The investigation that followed involved the release of surveillance footage to the public in the hopes of identifying the individuals responsible. The images captured two men near the apartment buildings shortly before the shooting occurred. The plea for public assistance in identifying these suspects was a crucial step in the early stages of the case. A significant breakthrough came nearly ten months later, in December 2020. Police arrested 24-year-old Michael Bennett of Prospect Lefferts Gardens in connection with the murder. Bennett was subsequently charged with murder and weapon possession. While his arrest marked a major development in the case, authorities continued their search for a second suspect believed to have been involved in the fatal shooting of Dontae McKenzie. The case against Bennett proceeded through the legal system as the search for the other individual remained active.
