On a fall evening in 2020, a trip to Brooklyn for a celebration turned into a tragedy for a young woman from Virginia. Daijyonna Akira Renee Long, a 20-year-old Black female, traveled from her home in Stafford to attend a Sweet 16 afterparty in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood. In the early hours of November 22, the gathering at an apartment on Albany Avenue was shattered by gunfire, claiming Daijyonna's life.
The event was intended to be a joyous occasion, but it became the scene of
a violent and retaliatory act. Investigators believe the shooting was connected to an earlier incident at the main Sweet 16 party, which had been broken up. The violence that erupted at the afterparty was not meant for Daijyonna. She was an innocent bystander caught in the crossfire as multiple gunmen opened fire. She was struck by five bullets as she attempted to escape the chaos. Emergency services rushed her to Woodhull Medical Center, but her injuries proved fatal.
The shooting left a scene of devastation, with six other individuals wounded. The intended target, a 16-year-old boy, was shot five times but survived. The investigation that followed pointed to a conflict involving rival gangs. Authorities determined that four shooters, using four different guns, were involved in the attack. The presence of members from the Rich Fam and Bergen Fam gangs was noted at both parties.
In the wake of the tragedy, law enforcement began the arduous task of bringing those responsible to justice. Their investigation led to the arrest of a 17-year-old suspect, who was subsequently charged with murder and weapon possession. Due to the suspect's age, his identity was not made public. The investigation continued as authorities worked to identify and apprehend all individuals involved in the deadly shooting.
