Who robbed and murdered this young woman in her apartment? In the early hours of May 14, 2006, Tiesha Sargeant, a 26-year-old Black woman, was tragically killed in the Brooklyn apartment she shared with her boyfriend, Keve Huggins. An accomplished individual, Sargeant was a graduate of the prestigious Brearley School and Wesleyan University, and was building a promising career in Manhattan. Her life, a testament to ambition and intelligence, was cut short in an act of violence that continues to puzzle investigators.
According to Huggins' account
to the police, three intruders broke into their apartment. He reported that he and Sargeant were bound together, and a sheet was placed over them. During the ordeal, one of the intruders fired a single shot, striking Sargeant in the back of the head. Huggins was physically unharmed and called the police after the assailants fled. When law enforcement arrived, they found Sargeant deceased at the scene.
The investigation into her death brought to light other activities within the apartment. Huggins admitted to police that he had been selling marijuana from the residence. On the day of the murder, he had allegedly completed a significant drug transaction. In the course of their investigation, police discovered marijuana in the apartment and a gun in the backyard, though it was not determined to be the murder weapon. Huggins was arrested on drug-related charges but was later released on bail.
Despite the initial investigation and the reopening of the case by the NYPD cold case squad in 2017, no suspects have been publicly named, and no arrests have been made in direct connection with Tiesha Sargeant's murder.
