On a late summer evening in Brooklyn, just as the vibrant energy of the West Indian Day Parade was winding down on September 5, 2011, Denise Gay, a 56-year-old retired home health aide, was enjoying the evening on her stoop in Crown Heights. What began as a peaceful moment soon descended into chaos and tragedy. A dispute erupted nearby, culminating in a shootout that would tragically claim her life.
