On a tragic Palm Sunday in 1984, a Brooklyn apartment that should have been filled with the sounds of a family gathering became a scene of unimaginable horror. Among the victims of what would come to be known as the 'Palm Sunday Massacre' was 20-year-old Carmen Perez. The brutal events of that day, April 15th, unfolded inside a residence at 1080 Liberty Avenue in East New York, where ten people, including eight children, were senselessly murdered.
The scene discovered by police was
chillingly serene, with victims found in relaxed poses, suggesting they were caught completely by surprise. There were no signs of a robbery or drug-related activities. The victims had all been shot at close range, most of them in the head. In total, nineteen bullets were fired from two different handguns. The deceased included Carmen Perez, her two young sons, Alberto and Noel Maldonado, and her sister, Migdalia Perez. The only survivor of the massacre was Carmen's infant daughter, who was found crawling among the deceased.
The investigation into the gruesome killings led police to Christopher Thomas, a man with a criminal record who was known to the family. The motive for the horrific crime was determined to be jealousy. Thomas believed that the owner of the apartment, Enrique Bermudez, was having an affair with his estranged wife. This unfounded suspicion reportedly sent Thomas into a jealous rage. On the day of the murders, he had visited the apartment asking for drugs and money.
In 1985, Christopher Thomas was arrested and stood trial for the ten murders. His defense argued that his heavy cocaine use at the time of the killings resulted in an 'extreme emotional disturbance,' and therefore he should not be held fully responsible for his actions. The jury ultimately convicted Thomas of ten counts of manslaughter, rather than murder. He was sentenced to a term that was capped by state law at 50 years. After serving 34 years, Christopher Thomas was released from prison in January 2018. His release was met with disbelief and outrage from the surviving family members and the law enforcement officers who investigated the case.
