In the borough of Brooklyn, a 54-year-old mother of four named Limose Dort was tragically killed in a hail of gunfire. She was a courageous and resilient woman who had moved to the United States from Haiti four years earlier with her youngest son in pursuit of a better life. On the evening of the shooting, Dort was returning home from her job as a home health aide when she was caught in the crossfire of what police believe was not intended for her.
The incident occurred on St.
John's Place, just steps from her residence. Witnesses reported hearing five or six gunshots, and in the aftermath, it was discovered that Dort had been shot twice in the stomach. A 30-year-old man was also shot in the arm during the same incident but was expected to survive. The bullets pierced a nearby car, shattering its back window. Her son expressed that there was nothing he could say to console his three older siblings who were still in Haiti, as he had to deliver the devastating news to them.
For months, the gunman remained at large. Then, based on an anonymous tip, the New York Police Department arrested 29-year-old Oliver Case in connection with the fatal shooting. Case was subsequently charged with murder for his alleged role in the death of Limose Dort, a woman who was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.
