In the late hours of a Friday night in May 2017, a family get-together in the Sea Gate neighborhood of Brooklyn turned into a scene of horror. Ivelisse Alvarado-Genao, a 30-year-old mother of two, was shot and killed. The tragic event unfolded on May 26, 2017, on West 36th Street, where she was attending a family reunion.
Her estranged husband, Gabino Genao, arrived at the gathering uninvited and confronted Alvarado-Genao. Witnesses reported that he first physically assaulted her.
When a female cousin tried to step in, he struck her as well. The altercation escalated dramatically when Gabino Genao pulled out a gun and shot his estranged wife multiple times in the head. Emergency responders pronounced her dead at the scene.
Immediately following the shooting, Gabino Genao fled, sparking a week-long manhunt. Authorities launched an extensive search for him, and he was eventually located and apprehended by U.S. Marshals on June 2, 2017, at a hotel in Newark, Delaware. At the time of his arrest, Genao, who had a history of prior arrests for charges including assault and robbery, initially tried to conceal his identity.
After his extradition back to Brooklyn, Gabino Genao was charged with murder, assault, reckless endangerment, and criminal possession of a weapon. In November 2021, he pleaded guilty to the charges. On March 29, 2022, a judge sentenced him to a minimum of 20 years to life in prison for the murder of his estranged wife. The sentencing brought a conclusion to the legal proceedings, holding him accountable for the death of the young mother.
