In the spring of 2021, Shalimar Birkett, a 32-year-old Black woman and mother of two from Queens, New York, found her life tragically cut short in an act of senseless violence. On the night of May 17th, she was in the Weeksville neighborhood of Brooklyn to mourn a friend, Miles Bobbsemple, who had himself been killed just hours earlier. A vigil was being held in his memory on Park Place, with about 60 to 70 people gathered to pay their respects.
It was a somber and quiet affair until just after 11 p.m., when a white or silver-colored sedan drove past the mourners.
From within the vehicle, gunfire erupted, with witnesses reporting hearing nine or ten shots fired indiscriminately into the crowd. Panic ensued as people scattered for safety. When the chaos subsided, Shalimar Birkett was found lying in the street with a gunshot wound to her head. Paramedics rushed her to Brookdale Hospital, but her injuries were too severe, and she was pronounced dead. Her mother, Patricia Hamilton, later expressed her profound grief, describing her daughter as an "outgoing, fun person, loved by everyone."
The New York Police Department immediately launched an investigation into the shooting. Authorities stated that they did not believe Birkett was the intended target of the attack. Instead, they theorized that the shooting was gang-related and that the actual targets were other individuals present at the vigil. It was suspected that the same individuals responsible for the earlier murder of Miles Bobbsemple had returned to the scene to commit further violence. Bobbsemple's death was believed to have stemmed from a dispute at a house party where he may have inadvertently disrespected a gang member.
In the weeks following the shooting, the NYPD released surveillance footage of a silver SUV they believed to be connected to Birkett's death and asked the public for assistance in identifying the vehicle and its occupants. However, despite these efforts and the pleas from her devastated family for justice, the case grew cold. As of late 2025, authorities were still reported to be searching for the suspects responsible for the murder of Shalimar Birkett. No arrests have been publicly announced in connection with her death, leaving a painful void for her family, including her two young sons, and a community still searching for answers and an end to the cycle of gun violence that claimed an innocent life. This tragedy was compounded by the fact that Birkett's mother had also lost a son to gun violence three years prior, a case that also remained unsolved.
