A simmering dispute over a parking spot in a Brooklyn Home Depot parking lot on a September afternoon escalated into a tragedy that claimed the life of 26-year-old Imani Sharpless. The aspiring model and singer was with her boyfriend, Cordel McDuffie, on September 9, 2023, when they became involved in a verbal altercation with another man over a parking space at the store located at Nostrand and DeKalb avenues in Bedford-Stuyvesant.
Following the initial argument, which McDuffie said he
tried to de-escalate, both parties went about their business inside the store. However, the conflict was far from over. After Sharpless and McDuffie left the Home Depot and drove a short distance to Willoughby Avenue and Sandford Street, the man from the parking lot dispute approached their vehicle. He then allegedly opened fire on the couple. Sharpless was struck in the head, and McDuffie was shot in the leg and sustained a graze wound to his back. Despite his injuries, McDuffie managed to drive away to seek help.
Both Sharpless and her boyfriend were rushed to a nearby hospital. Sharpless remained in critical condition for five days before she succumbed to her injuries on September 14, 2023. Her death was a devastating blow to her family, with her mother, Alverna Sharpless, expressing profound grief over the senseless loss of her daughter.
The New York Police Department launched an investigation and, on September 26, 2023, arrested 58-year-old Quincy James Davis of Gwynn Oak, Maryland, in connection with the shooting. Davis was subsequently indicted on charges of second-degree murder, second-degree attempted murder, first-degree assault, and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon. He was ordered held without bail. The case is currently moving through the court system, with Davis appearing in court as recently as January 2024. In a surprising development, Imani's mother revealed that she has been in regular contact with Davis by phone and has expressed forgiveness, even as she seeks justice for her daughter. The trial date had not yet been set as of early 2025.
